Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Polystoma.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Polystoma (J. G. H. Zeder in J. A. E. Goeze Erster Nachtrag zur Naturgeschichte der Eingeweidewürmer (1800) 147) < ancient Greek πολύστομος many-mouthed < πολυ- poly- comb. form + -στόμα mouth (see stoma n.); compare -stome comb. form. Compare French polystome (1869 in Littré as adjective and noun in zoological use). Compare earlier polystomatous adj., polystomous adj.
