单词 polystomatous
释义

polystomatousadj.

Brit. /ˌpɒlɪˈstəʊmətəs/, /ˌpɒlɪˈstɒmətəs/, U.S. /ˌpɑliˈstoʊmədəs/, /ˌpɑliˈstɑmədəs/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, -stomatous comb. form.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -stomatous comb. form. With the use in quot. 1825 compare French polystome (1813 or earlier with reference to a volcano, now obsolete in this sense; now only in zoological use (1869 in this sense: see polystome adj.)). In quot. 1841 probably after French polystomées, plural noun (1834 or earlier with reference to medusae); compare scientific Latin Polystomata (1813 or earlier). Compare polystomous adj., which is attested earlier in zoological use.
Chiefly Zoology.
