Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, -phyllous comb. form.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -phyllous comb. form, probably after scientific Latin polyphyllus in plant names (from at least the late 17th cent. in post-classical Latin sources, and subsequently in scientific Latin as a specific epithet in binomials). Compare ancient Greek πολύϕυλλος having many leaves.
Botany.
1. Of a perianth, calyx, corolla, etc.: having or consisting of many separate members; not united. Opposed to monophyllous, gamophyllous. Cf. polypetalous adj., polysepalous adj. Now chiefly historical.
