Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin pectin- , pecten , -oid suffix.

Etymology: < classical Latin pectin-, pecten scallop (see pecten n.) + -oid suffix, after scientific Latin pectinoidae (plural), pectinoides (E. M. da Costa Elem. Conchol. (1776) 263, 292). With the adjective compare earlier pectiniform adj.In form pectenoid perhaps directly < pecten n. + -oid suffix; however, compare scientific Latin pectenoides (1819 in an apparently isolated attestation).
