Etymology: < classical Latin pectin-, pecten scallop (see pecten n.) + -ite suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin pectinites (J. P. de Tournefort 1704, in Mém. de l'Acad. Royale des Sci. 231). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·ktinəit) /ˈpɛktɪnaɪt/.
Palaeontology. Obsolete.
A fossil pecten or scallop.
