Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin polyonymos , -ous suffix; Greek πολυώνυμος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin polyonymos, polyonymus having many names (5th cent.) or its etymon ancient Greek πολυώνυμος having many names, (of divinities) worshipped under many names ( < πολυ- poly- comb. form + -ώνυμος , combining form of ancient Greek (Doric and Aeolic) ὄνυμα (ancient Greek (Attic) ὄνομα ) name: see onomato- comb. form) + -ous suffix; compare anonymous adj. In sense 2 after polyonym n. Compare polyonymy n.In form polyonomous , probably after ancient Greek ὄνομα (see onomato- comb. form).
