Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: poly- comb. form, -gram comb. form.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -gram comb. form. With sense 1 compare ancient Greek πολύγραμμος many-striped (Aristotle), classical Latin polygrammos many-striped (Pliny); in quot. 1903 at sense 1 after monogram n.3 In sense 2 after polygraph n. (see sense 3 at that entry).
