Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: poly- comb. form, gastric adj.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + gastric adj., after monogastric adj. (see sense 2 at that entry) and (in the specific sense) scientific Latin Polygastrica ( C. G. Ehrenberg Infusionsthierchen als vollkommene Organismen (1838) p. xix, 1).

Having many stomachs or digestive cavities; spec. of or relating to the former group Polygastrica of protozoans whose food-containing vacuoles were thought to be separate digestive organs (now historical).
