Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pollic- , pollex , -ate suffix2.
Etymology: < classical Latin pollic-, pollex thumb (see pollex n.) + -ate suffix2. In specific sense after scientific Latin Pollicata, former order name ( J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 66). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫ·likĕt) /ˈpɒlɪkət/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Having thumbs; spec. of or relating to the former order Pollicata of mammals having opposable digits, which included monkeys, lower primates, and many marsupials.
