Etymology: < Middle French, French porcelet (1567; also as pourcelet ), probably shortened < porcelet Saint-Antoine , pourcelet de Saint-Antoine (1562; now regional) < porcelet little pig (c1210; < porcel , porceau pig (a1134 in Old French; French pourceau ) + -et -et suffix¹) + saint saint adj. + the male forename Antoine (post-classical Latin Antonius : see Anthony n.). Compare Italian †porcelletto (1561 in this sense; also porcellino (1521 in this sense)).Middle French, French porcelet Saint-Antoine apparently alludes to the piglet conventionally associated with St Anthony.
