Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: idio- comb. form, -some comb. form.
Etymology: < idio- comb. form + -some comb. form.In sense 2, originally a mistranscription of German Idiozom (see idiozome n.), but subsequently treated as a variant or replacement term. Compare French idiosome (C. Regaud 1910, in Arch. d'anat. microsc. 11 343).
1. Biology. Whitman's term for: a hypothetical unit of living protoplasm involved in heredity. Cf. idioblast n. 2, pangene n. Obsolete.

2. Cell Biology. A distinct spheroidal region of the cytoplasm surrounding the centrioles in the developing germ cells of animals, containing granules and membranous structures and associated with the Golgi apparatus. Also called idiozome.
