Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: idio- comb. form, soma n.2
Etymology: < idio- comb. form + soma n.2, probably after German Idiosoma (1915 or earlier). Compare Dutch idiosoma (1922 or earlier; probably < German). Compare earlier idiosome n.
Zoology.
The main part of the body of a mite or tick, consisting of the abdomen fused with the prosoma and typically separated from the capitulum (gnathosoma) by a furrow.
