Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Poinsettia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Poinsettia, genus name (R. Graham 1836, in Edinb. New Philos. Jrnl. 20 412) < the name of J. R. Poinsett (1779–1851), U.S. minister to Mexico + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1.
Any of various shrubby plants of the former genus Poinsettia (now included in Euphorbia), native to Central America and the southern United States and having prominent, usually brightly coloured bracts surrounding the small flowers; spec. Euphorbia (formerly Poinsettia) pulcherrima, which has bright red (occasionally pink or white) bracts and is cultivated as a house plant, esp. for display at Christmas. Formerly also (in form Poinsettia): the genus itself.
