Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paristhmia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin paristhmia (6th cent. as paritmia ) < ancient Greek παρίσθμια tonsils, inflammation of the tonsils, plural of παρίσθμιον fauces ( < παρα- para- prefix1 + ἰσθμός neck, narrow passage or connection (see isthmus n.) + -ιον , suffix forming nouns; compare -y suffix4).
Anatomy. Obsolete.
With plural agreement. The tonsils.
