Etymology: < German Poliencephalitis ( C. Wernicke Lehrb. der Gehirnkrankheiten (1881) II. ii. 229) < ancient Greek πολιός grey (see poliosis n.) + ἐγκέϕαλος brain (see encephalos n.) + German -itis -itis suffix.The spelling of the headword form is influenced by poliomyelitis n.

Any of various inflammatory diseases of the grey matter of the brain, esp. cerebral poliomyelitis (Wernicke's disease).
