Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pack n.1, an element of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < pack n.1 (compare pechle , variant of pauchle n. (see β forms s.v.); for a similar semantic development compare bag n. 13) + a second element of unknown origin (see note). Alternatively perhaps compare pech v.With the second element, perhaps compare Scottish Gaelic -an , diminutive suffix (see clachan n.). In later use chiefly after Burns's use in quot. 1786. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·χăn, pe·χyăn) /ˈpɛxən/ /ˈpɛçən/.
