单词 plant-animal
释义

plant-animaln.

Brit. /ˈplɑːntˌanᵻml/, /ˈplantˌanᵻml/, U.S. /ˈplæntˌænəm(ə)l/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: plant n.1, animal n.
Etymology: < plant n.1 + animal n., after French †plant-animal (1602 in the source translated in quot. 1621 at sense 1; < post-classical Latin plantanimal ( G. Budé Annot. in Pandectas(1508)), itself after Hellenistic Greek ζωόϕυτον zoophyte n.).
Now rare.
1. An organism which has characteristics of both an animal and a plant. In early use: †a plant which is supposed to resemble an animal in some respect; = zoophyte n. 2 (obsolete). In later use chiefly: an animal which resembles a plant in form, usually sessile and having a branching or radiating structure; = zoophyte n. 1.
