Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: French sonoreux ; Latin sonōrus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Originally (in quot. 1611) < French †sonoreux (a1524 in Middle French) < classical Latin sonōrus (see below) + Middle French -eux -ous suffix. Subsequently < classical Latin sonōrus full of sound, loud, (of diction) high-sounding ( < sonor sound < sonāre to sound (see sound v.1) + -or -or suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier sonorously adv., and also earlier sonore adj.Compare post-classical Latin sonorosus (6th cent., c1200 in British sources; also in continental sources), Middle French, French sonore (1593; earliest in the adverb sonorement : see sonorously adv.).
