单词 sonse
释义

sonsen.

Brit. /sɒns/, U.S. /sɑns/, Scottish English /sons/, Irish English /sʌns/
Forms: Scottish pre-1700 1700s sons, pre-1700 1700s 1900s– sonce, 1700s sonsy (see note), 1700s– sonse, 1900s– shonce; Irish English (chiefly northern) 1800s– sonce, 1800s– sonse.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic sonas.
Etymology: Apparently < Scottish Gaelic sonas good fortune, prosperity, happiness (Early Irish sonas ; < son prosperous, fortunate, lucky (of unknown origin) + -as , suffix forming nouns: see -ness suffix); compare Irish sonas, in the same sense. With sonse fa' ye, sonse on ye at sense 2 perhaps compare Scottish Gaelic sonas..ort , lit. ‘prosperity..on you’ and sonas..dhuit , lit. ‘prosperity..to you’. The form sonsy appears in a poetic work in the context of a similar phrase, where it specifies a nonstandard disyllabic pronunciation, apparently for the sake of metre.
Scottish and Irish English. Now rare.
