Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek -γονία, γονία.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -γονία, combining form (in e.g. θεογονία theogony n.) of γονία reproduction, begetting < γόνος semen, offspring, generation (see gono- comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare post-classical Latin -gonia (in e.g. psychogonia psychogony n.), Middle French, French -gonie, German -gonie.Earliest in borrowings ultimately from Greek, frequently via French and/or Latin, as psychogony n., theogony n., etc. Formations within English are found from at least the 19th cent., e.g. pathogony n., ptochogony n., patrogony n.
Forming nouns denoting the generation or development of something specified by the first element, or the study of this, as mythogony n., pathogony n., plasmogony n., etc.
