Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Pakistani adj. and n.
Etymology: Shortened < Pakistani adj. and n.The form is attested earlier in connection with the proposals for a separate state of Pakistan articulated by C. Rahmat Ali (1933), derived (either by contraction or by analogy with existing ethnonyms forming other names in -istan ) from the newly coined name Pakistan . Compare Pakistani adj. and n. 1935 C. Rahmat Ali (title) Pakistan, the fatherland of the Pak nation. In South Asia Pak is used, especially in newspaper headings, as a shortened form of ‘Pakistan’, e.g.:1954 G. S.
