Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: plaster n., of prep., Paris n.
Etymology: < plaster n. + of prep. + Paris n., so called because it was originally prepared from the gypsum of Montmartre, Paris. Compare post-classical Latin plastrum de Paris' (1323, 1330 in British sources), plastrum Parisiense (1252, 1301 in British sources), Anglo-Norman plastre de Paris (1284).
A hard white solid formed from a paste of water and partly dehydrated gypsum, used for making sculptures and casts and for immobilizing broken bones; (also) the powder or paste from which this is made. Frequently attributive.Also used (esp. formerly in the U.S.) as a fertilizer.
