Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French plein jeu.
Etymology: < French plein jeu organ stop that has a very loud sound (1542 in a contract for the construction of an organ), a type of mixture stop combining the fourniture and the cymbal (1885 or earlier) < plein plain adj.1 + jeu (see jeu de dames n.). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation as (plen ʒö) /plɛ̃ ʒø/.

An organ stop or combination of stops producing a full chorus of montres (diapasons and principals) in octaves, plus fourniture (additional mixture pipes, adding fifths), and sometimes cymbal; (also) music written for the full organ. Also figurative.
