Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Ontario , -an suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Ontario, a province of east-central Canada (and also the smallest of the Great Lakes: see note) + -an suffix.Ontario was settled by the French and English in the 17th cent., ceded to Britain in 1763, and became one of the original four provinces in the Dominion of Canada in 1867. The name, which was first applied to Lake Ontario, is a French spelling of Mohawk õtarí·yo beautiful lake ( < õtar lake, river, waterway + iyo beautiful. It occurs in English contexts from at least 1698.
