Etymology: < phyto- comb. form + -nomy comb. form. Compare German Phytonomie (1801 or earlier), French phytonomie (1826 or earlier). Compare earlier phytology n., zoonomy n.
rare (now chiefly historical).
The branch of science concerned with the laws or principles of plant life, variously interpreted as covering their internal anatomy, their physiology, or their growth and development (sometimes contrasted with purely descriptive botany).
