Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mentagra.
Etymology: < classical Latin mentagra an eruptive disease occurring on the chin (only attested in Pliny) < mentum chin (see mentum n.) + ancient Greek ἄγρα a catching, after classical Latin podagra podagra n. and chīragra (see chiragrical adj.). Compare Middle French, French mentagre (1529).
Medicine. Now historical.
Any of various skin diseases affecting the chin; spec. = sycosis n. 2.
