Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕαντός , -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ϕαντός visible ( < ancient Greek ϕαν- , stem of ϕαίνειν to show, cause to appear (see -phane comb. form) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -scope comb. form. Compare earlier phantascope n.With sense 1 compare earlier phenakistoscope n.

1894 Westm. Gaz. 14 Sept. 8/1 This new invention, called the phantoscope, and patented by Mr. W. S. Simpson, differs from the traditional kaleidoscope as..any object whatever can, through an aperture at the end, be placed within it—a bee, for instance, a butterfly, a spray of maidenhair fern, or a sprig of heather, producing a complex vision of quite inconceivable beauty.
