Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin permeation-, permeatio passage from one place to another (a1540), or independently < classical Latin permeāt-, past participial stem of permeāre permeate v. + -ion suffix1. Compare French †perméation penetration (1641; 1611 in sense ‘(of a fluid) easy running’). Compare later permeate v.
