Etymology: < myosin n. + -ogen comb. form, after fibrinogen n. at fibrino- comb. form (see quot. 1887¹). Compare German myosinogen (adjective, in myosinogene Substanz, O. Nasse in Zur Anatomie u. Physiologie der quergestreiften Muskelsubstanz (1882) iv. 78), after Fibrogen (noun).

A water-soluble protein or mixture of proteins extracted from muscle and formerly believed to be a precursor of myosin. Cf. myogen n.
