Etymology: < pheno- comb. form + -ose suffix2, after German Phenose (L. Carius 1865, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 136 324). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fī·nōus) /ˈfiːnəʊs/.

1866 Eng. Mech. 7 Sept. 521/1 It is said that a chemist has extracted from coal a substance chemically undistinguishable from sugar. He has named it ‘phenoze’.
1869 G. Fownes Man. Elem. Chem., Theoret. & Pract. 495 Benzene is also capable of uniting directly with three molecules of hypochlorous acid..and is converted by alkalies into a saccharine compound called phenose, C6H12O6, isomeric with glucose or grape-sugar.
1880 Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. 2 210 The anticipation had been that a substitution of hydroxyl for chlorine would occur, giving rise to hydroxylated addition products, similar to, or identical with phenose C6H6(OH)6.
