单词 phalangist
释义

phalangistn.1

Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French phalangiste; Latin Phalangista.
Etymology: < French †phalangiste (J. Capuron Nouveau dict. de médecine (1810) at cited word; earlier denoting a kind of scarab (1776)) or its etymon scientific Latin †Phalangista, former genus name (G. Cuvier & E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire 1795, in Magasin encyclopédique 2 187: see below). Compare earlier phalanger n.It is probably more likely that Cuvier and Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire formed scientific Latin †Phalangista < phalang- (in French phalanger phalanger n.) + scientific Latin -ista (see -ist suffix), being unaware of Storr's 1780 coinage of scientific Latin Phalanger , than that it originated as an alteration of scientific Latin Phalanger phalanger n. with suffix substitution (compare -ist suffix). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fălæ·ndʒist, fæ·lăndʒist) /fəˈlændʒɪst/, /ˈfæləndʒɪst/.
Zoology. Obsolete.
A phalanger or phalangerid.Phalangista was the genus name commonly used for the phalangers until the late 19th cent., when the priority of Phalanger was recognized.
