Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: peri- prefix, -derm comb. form.
Etymology: < peri- prefix + -derm comb. form. In sense 1 perhaps partly after French périderme (see peridermis n.) or German Periderma (see peridermis n.). Compare earlier peridermis n. With sense 2 compare perisarc n.
1. Botany. Originally: the corky layer of a plant stem. Later: an outer protective layer comprising phellem, phellogen, and phelloderm, which develops during secondary growth of shoots and roots and during wound healing.
