Hence (now usually) in modern use: a short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman's jacket, dress, or blouse to create a hanging frill or flounce. Frequently attributive.

Cf. sword-and-sandal n.Though frequently popular worldwide, the relatively low production values and poor dubbing of many of these films meant that peplum was often used somewhat depreciatively.
