Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: table n., -ness suffix.
Etymology: < table n. + -ness suffix, after post-classical Latin menseitas (Erasmus), itself after Hellenistic Greek τραπεζότης (Diogenes Laertius, citing Plato). Compare earlier tableity n.
Philosophy.
The essential nature of a table; the abstract quality of being a table; = tableity n.

1853 C. D. Yonge tr. Diogenes Lives & Opinions Eminent Philosophers vi. 236 Plato made answer, ‘That is natural enough, for you have eyes, by which a cup and a table are contemplated; but you have not intellect, by which tableness and cupness are seen’.
