Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Peperomia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Peperomia, genus name (H. Ruiz & J. Pavon Floræ Peruvianæ (1794) 8) < ancient Greek πέπερι pepper (see pepper n.), so called from its similarity to the pepper + -omia, of unknown origin.
Botany.
A large mostly tropical American genus of the pepper family ( Piperaceae), consisting of small herbaceous succulent plants, many of them epiphytic, and including a number grown as house plants for their variegated foliage; (also peperomia) a plant of this genus.
