Etymology: < post-classical Latin Paulianista member of a sect founded by Paul of Samosata in the 3rd cent. a.d. (5th cent.) < Paulianus (see Paulian n.¹) + -ista -ist suffix, originally after French Paulianiste (1630 or earlier). Compare Byzantine Greek Παυλιανιστής (6th–7th cent.). Compare Paulianite n. and earlier Paulian n.¹
