Etymology: < classical Latin Parius of the island of Paros, one of the Cyclades, famed for a white marble highly valued among the ancients for statuary, also as noun (usually plural), native or inhabitant of Paros, in post-classical Latin also (noun) Parian marble (8th cent., 12th cent. in British glossarial sources) (compare ancient Greek Πάριος , adjective and noun) + -an suffix. Compare French parien (1545 in Middle French in the passage translated in quot. 1550 at sense A. 1; 1868 in sense A. 2, < English).With Parian marble, Parian stone, etc., compare classical Latin Pariī lapidēs (plural), Parius marmor, ancient Greek Πάριος λίθος, Πάριος λύγδος, Middle French, French marbre parien (1552 or earlier).
