Origin: A borrowing from Latin; originally modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Latin redimīt-, redimīre.
Etymology: < classical Latin redimīt-, past participial stem of redimīre to crown, wreathe, perhaps < redimīculum band attached to the back of a headdress ( < red- , variant (before a vowel) of re- re- prefix + amiculum amiculum n.), reinterpreted as a derivative formation in -culum -culum suffix. In quot. 1592 after < Italian redimito, past participle of redimire ( < classical Latin redimīre ). Compare earlier redimite adj.
Obsolete. rare.
