Etymology: < para- prefix¹ + thio- comb. form + -n, apparently an arbitrary ending (or perhaps after ancient Greek θεῖον sulphur). Compare later malathion n., and perhaps earlier philothion n.

A highly toxic synthetic organophosphorus compound, also containing sulphur, used as an agricultural and horticultural pesticide; diethyl-p-nitrophenylthiophosphate, (C₂H₅O)₂PS(OC₆H₄NO₂).
