Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly from a proper name. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: proper name Panomphaeus; Greek πανομϕαῖος.
Etymology: < classical Latin Panomphaeus author of divination, an epithet of Jupiter (Ovid Metamorphoses: see quot. 1626 at sense 1) and its etymon ancient Greek πανομϕαῖος universally prophetic, author of divination, an epithet of Zeus ( < παν- pan- comb. form + ὀμϕή voice of a god, oracular response ( < the same Indo-European base as sing v.1) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. In sense 2 arising from a misinterpretation of the Latin or Greek. In sense 3 after Middle French panomphee (1564 in Rabelais), a humorous use.
Now rare.
1. Chiefly poetic. That is the source of all oracular voices or messages; esp. as an epithet of the god Jupiter. Also occasionally more generally: of or relating to Jupiter. Obsolete.
