单词 rugnet
释义

rugnetn.

Brit. /ˈrʌɡnɛt/, U.S. /ˈrəɡˌnɛt/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, net n.1
Etymology: < a first element apparently related to rug v.2 (although the precise nature of the relationship is unclear) + net n.1In view of the fact that in quot. 16301 the compound occurs alongside bley-net and smelt-net , which clearly show blay n. and smelt n.1 as first elements and denote nets used to catch these fish, it seems at least possible that rug may be a noun denoting a different fish. However, if so, the identity of the fish in question is uncertain, and rug is not attested independently as a fish name. Additionally, the occurrence of rug v.2 from the same date would suggest that the name refers to the manner of use of the net, rather than to the type of fish which it is intended to catch.
Now historical and rare.
A kind of fishing net formerly used on the Thames.
