Perhaps: a sort of net or mat, woven from pieces of cable.

Etymology: Origin unknown; perhaps compare Spanish pallón a quantity of gold or silver from an assay (1569), Italian pallone ball (see pallone n.). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pæ·lyən) /ˈpæljən/.
