Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pandurina.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin pandurina (1619 in M. Praetorius Syntagma Musicum ii xxvii 53; apparently given as a Latin equivalent of German Bandürichen ) < classical Latin pandūra lute (see pandoura n.) + -īna -ine suffix⁴. Compare mandolin n.Pandurina does not otherwise seem to be attested in Latin or Italian (except in uses deriving from Praetorius). Praetorius associated the instrument particularly with France. However, later uses of the word apply especially to Italian instruments (compare quot. 1954).
