单词 decimal
释义

decimaladj.n.

Brit. /ˈdɛsᵻml/, U.S. /ˈdɛs(ə)məl/
Forms: 1600s decimall, 1600s– decimal.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin decimus , -al suffix1; Latin decimalis.
Etymology: Partly (i) < classical Latin decimus tenth (earlier decumus ; < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit daśamá , Avestan dasəmo ) + -al suffix1; and partly (ii) < post-classical Latin decimalis having the right to collect tithes (10th cent.; 12th cent. in a British source), subject to or paid as a tithe (11th cent.; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources; < classical Latin decima decima n. + -ālis -al suffix1). Compare Middle French decimal, French décimal that concerns or affects one in every ten (1520 in pugnition decimalle decimation), that reckons or proceeds by powers of ten (1680 in arithmétique décimale), and also post-classical Latin decimalis that reckons or proceeds by powers of ten (1617 in decimalis arithmetica, referring to Stevin's 1608 work, after English). With use with reference to tithes compare also Old French, Middle French decimal (of land) subject to a tithe (end of the 13th cent.).Compare also Spanish decimal (1379 in sense ‘of or relating to tithes’, late 18th cent. in sense ‘that reckons or proceeds by powers of ten’), Portuguese decimal that reckons or proceeds by powers of ten (1551 as †decymais , plural), Italian decimale that reckons or proceeds by powers of ten (a1580). In sense A. 1a originally as a translation of Middle French disme dime n.

b. Designating a positional mathematical notation in which a number less than 1 is represented as a sequence of digits successively representing one tenth, one hundredth, one thousandth, and so on, using symbolism that conveys this fact; involving or relating to such a system. The modern way of representing a decimal number is with a point or a comma, the first digit to the right of this representing tenths (e.g. 0.3 is three tenths), the second digit hundredths (as 0.36, three tenths and six hundredths), etc. The point (raised or on the line) is usual in English-speaking countries (as in 7·34, 7.34); a comma is common in continental Europe (7,34). Cf. decimal point n. at Compounds. The invention of decimal fractions is commonly attributed to S. Stevin in Thiende (1585) (in Dutch; cf. quot. 1608 at sense A. 1a), although he used a more complicated way of representing the digits of a decimal number. There was long considerable variation in the notation. C. Rudolff in Exempel Büchlein Rechnung belangend (1530) used a vertical line where a point or comma is now used. The introduction of the point is variously attributed to C. Clavius Astrolabium (1593) and to B. Pitiscus Trigonometria (1595). A comma was used by J. Napier in Rabdologia (1617), though inconsistently. The dot became established in the United Kingdom in the 19th cent.: a raised dot was usual as a decimal separator, a dot on the line indicating a product. The opposite convention obtained in the United States. However, this distinction has largely disappeared in print in both countries. For a full history of the symbolism see F. Cajori Hist. Math. Notations (1928) I. 314ff.Formerly occasionally with ordinal denoting the number of decimal places or specifying a particular decimal place, as decimal seconds, decimal thirds, etc. (see e.g. quots. a1690, 1777).
