单词 | decillion |
释义 | decillionn. Originally: the cardinal number equal to the tenth power of a million, represented by 1 followed by sixty zeros (1060) (now chiefly British). Later also (originally U.S.): the cardinal number equal to the eleventh power of a thousand, or 1 followed by thirty-three zeros (1033). Also hyperbolically: an unspecified but very large number or amount.Quot. 1709 refers to Archimedes' use of the number 1063 in his work Psammites. Archimedes expressed this quantity differently, as 10 million units of the 8th numbers; the basis of this numeration is a myriad (104), the unit of the 2nd numbers is a myriad myriads (108), and the unit of the 8th number (108)7, i.e. 1056. 10 million times 1056 is 1063, which Archimedes estimated was the number of grains of sand that would fill the heliocentric universe as envisaged by Aristarchus.
