Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin papȳrus , -aceous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin papȳrus papyrus n. + -aceous suffix, probably after either classical Latin papȳrāceus made from the papyrus plant or from material made from this plant, or French papyracé papery (1722 as papiracé; compare Middle French papyracee made of papyrus (1558 in Rabelais in an apparently isolated attestation)). Compare Italian papiraceo made of papyrus (1727; 1499 as papiracio in an apparently isolated attestation).
