释义

primus inter paresadj.n.

Forms: 1600s– primus inter pares, 1800s– prima inter pares Brit. /ˌpriːmə(r) ˌɪntə ˈpɑːreɪz/, /ˌprʌɪmə(r) ˌɪntə ˈpɛːriːz/, U.S. /ˈˌpraɪmə ˌɪntər ˈpɛˌriz/ (chiefly denoting a woman or a thing considered as female).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin primus inter pares.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin primus inter pares (first half of the 17th cent. or earlier: see note below) < classical Latin prīmus prime adj. + inter between, among (see inter- prefix) + parēs , accusative plural of pār a person of equal rank (see peer n.).The earliest use of the post-classical Latin phrase ( Pierre d'Avity Archontologia cosmica (1628) 156) refers to the respective status of bishops. It is now frequently used by Orthodox theologians of the status of the Pope vis-a-vis the patriarchs of the Orthodox Church; if this was its original reference, it may be at least as early as the Council of Florence (1438–45). In form prima inter pares after Latin prima, feminine of primus. In plural form primi inter pares after Latin primi, plural of primus. Not fully naturalized in English.
In predicative use: ‘first among equals’; designating the most senior or prominent in a group otherwise of the same rank or position. Also occasionally as n.
