单词 pam
释义

Pamn.

Brit. /pam/, U.S. /pæm/
Forms: 1600s– Pam, 1700s Pamm, 1800s Palm, 1900s– Paam (Scottish).
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from French. Etymon: French pamphile.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably shortened < French pamphile name of a card game, and of the jack of clubs in the game (although this is apparently first attested later: 1777), earlier in sense ‘servile person’ < Pamphile , used as a proper name by La Bruyère (second half of the 17th cent.) < ancient Greek πάμϕιλος beloved of all (see pamphlet n.). Compare Danish †pamfilius jack of clubs (a1719 or earlier), and also:1824 J. Mactaggart Sc. Gallovidian Encycl. 376 Pawmie, a name for the Knave at Cards.1825 J. Jamieson Etymol. Dict. Sc. Lang. Suppl. Pamphie, a vulgar name given at cards to the knave of clubs, Aberd[een]; elsewhere Pawmie, S[outh].
