Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pōlypus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pōlypus polypus n. + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French, French polypeux (1552 in sense ‘(of a person) suffering from a polyp in the nose’, now obsolete in this sense; 1726 or earlier in sense 1b; 1784 or earlier in sense 2, now obsolete in this sense). Compare polypose adj.

a. Relating to or of the nature of a blood clot in the heart or a large blood vessel. Esp. in polypous concretion. Cf. polypus n. 1b. Obsolete.
