Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paludi-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin paludi-, combining form (in e.g. paludicola : see paludicolous adj.) of classical Latin palūd- , palūs palus n.1; compare -i- connective.Found in the 17th cent. in the isolated formation paludiferous adj., and in the 19th cent. in the adaptations paludicole adj. and paludicolous adj. The position of the stress differs between compounds of paludi- in accordance with the general stress patterns of English.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘of or relating to marshes, marshy’.
paludiferous adj. Obsolete rare producing a marsh or marshes.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
